Discover the Playa del Sombrerico: a corner of paradise in Andalusia

🌅 A beach at the end of the road… but close to everything

Would you like to take a dip in a quiet cove, without the crowds and with an authentic atmosphere? Then make a note of this name: Playa del Sombrerico.

Located to the south of Mojácar, this beach combines a volcanic landscape, crystal-clear waters and absolute tranquillity. There are no garish beach bars, no sunbeds everywhere, no commercial music… just sea, rock and people who know how to appreciate the simple things.

📍 Where is Sombrerico beach?

It is about 7 km south of the seafront promenade of Mojácar, just after the Torre del Pirulico, in the direction of Carboneras.

🗺️ Just type ‘Playa del Sombrerico’ into Google Maps and follow a dirt track for about 4 km. It is narrow and dusty, but accessible with a normal car (and at a leisurely pace).

🚗 Access and parking: a little effort for a great reward

🚙 By car:

  • From Carboneras towards Mojácar.
  • About 5 km after Sopalmo, on the right you will see the unfinished buildings.
  • At the next roundabout, take the dirt road that runs along the beach to the right. Drive about 2 km. Leave the Torre del Pirulico on your left, continue another 2 km and you will arrive at Sombrerico Beach.

🅿️ There are two free parking areas, quite close to the shore. In summer, they fill up quickly.

💡 Nicolás’ tip: arrive before 10 am or after 6 pm.. You’ll have perfect light and fewer people.

🏖️ What is this beach like?

Sombrerico Beach is:

  • About 270 metres long
  • With coarse sand, pebbles and volcanic rocks
  • With a rocky entrance to the sea (watch your feet!)

The atmosphere is very relaxed and varied: families, naturists, van drivers, laid-back travellers and the odd local who knows the area well.

🧘‍♂️ A beach for everyone: naturism, dogs and vans (almost anything goes)

Officially:

  • Dogs are not allowed
  • Camping is not allowed

But in practice…

  • There are motorhomes that spend the night without any problems
  • Naturists and bathers in swimming costumes coexist in harmony

The important thing here is respect. If you are one of those people who leave the place as you found it, this is the place for you.

🍴 The beach bar: a little luxury in the middle of nowhere

Right next to the beach there is a charming beach bar, with:

  • Homemade food
  • Rustic terrace with shade
  • Good atmosphere, unpretentious
  • Sometimes live music on weekends

🎟️ It is very popular, so book if you go in high season.

💡 Local tip: eat early on (around 13:00) and you’ll get a table without stress.

🐠 What to do at Sombrerico beach?

1. Simple and beautiful snorkelling

The seabed, among the rocks and seaweed, is perfect for seeing small fish and marine life. You don’t need to swim far.

🎒 Bring flippers, mask and snorkel.

2. Hiking trails around

From Sombrerico you can walk along nature trails that connect to other coves or viewpoints. The views of the sea and the rock formations are spectacular.

📍 Check AllTrails: there are at least 4 marked routes in this area.

3. Relax and do nothing

.

Time passes slowly here. You can lie down, read, listen to the waves, or simply gaze at the horizon.

💡 My secret spot: the far right of the beach, past some rocks. Total peace.

📅 When is the best time to go?

SeasonAdvantagesDisadvantages
April – JuneFew people, pleasant weatherWater still fresh
July – AugustWarm sea, beach bar openMore heat, more visitors
September – OctoberGolden light, mild seaShorter days
WinterIdeal for walking, thinking, meditatingSwimming only for the brave

💡 If you can, come during the week and outside of high season. You’ll enjoy it twice as much.

🎒 What to take (and what not to forget)?

✅ Water (not always available at the beach bar)

✅ Sunscreen

✅ Cap or hat

✅ Plastic sandals.

✅ Take fins, a mask and snorkel.

✅ Thick towel or mat

✅ Trash bag (take it with you!)

And if you’re the kind of person who can’t bear to be parted from a book, this is the place for you to read without interruption.

⚠️ Useful tips and warnings

  • There is no lifeguard
  • There are no public services (only those of the beach bar)
  • There is no natural shade (parasol or cap essential)
  • Little or no mobile phone coverage
